Smith, Andrew Clemmer : Andrew C. Smith, aged 78 years, a retired farmer who at once time was prominent in the Republican party councils of Adams County, representative in the legislature from 1896 to 1900, died at his home, No. 1741 Seventh Street, this city, late Thursday afternoon. Mr. Smith had been an invalid ever since moving to Portsmouth from Stout, Ohio, in 1913, suffering mainly with hardening of the arteries. He had been bedfast for the past three weeks. Mr. Smith was born at Mount Leigh, Adams County, and during his early life followed the occupation of a school teacher. He was also a musician of considerable ability and was a member of the band of the Twenty-fourth O. V. I. Regiment. He served four years during the Civil War with different commands. He and his wife, Mrs. Mary J. Puntenney, who survives him celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last October. He also leaves four children; Rev. Edgar P. Smith, of United Presbyterian, minister of Oklahoma City, Okla., Mrs. M. Maude Mitchell wife of Rev. William C. Mitchell of Antwerp, Ohio; H. C. Smith of Cincinnati and Harry E. Smith, an N & W civil engineer of this city. James H. Smith of Manchester, was his brother. Mr. Smith was a faithful member of the United Presbyterian church, was a man of noble qualities and liked and respected by all who knew him. Funeral services will be conducted at the late home at 12:30 noon today by Rev. Frank Boyd of Cherry Fork and intimate friend of the bereaved family assisted by Rev. J. W. Smith, Carmen V. Haug: Zanesville-Carmen V. Haug Smith 83, of Zanesville, died at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at her home. She was born Feb. 2, 1922, in Muskingum County, a daughter of the late Carl F. Haug. She had worked for 36 1/2 years at General Electric and was a member of Eagles Ladies Auxiliary, Immanuel United Church of Christ and loved to travel. Carmen was a people person, who never met a stranger and enjoyed all those that she met. Surviving are her loving husband of 47 years, Harry M. Smith, of the home; three sister-in-laws and brothers-in-laws, Elizabeth (Lynn) Dennis, Lala Bryan, and Martha (Bud) Wortman all of Zanesville; a niece, Lori Wortman; and two best friends, Sue Burns and Shirley Mann, all of Zanesville. Besides her father, she was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Donald R. Bryan. Smith, Dorothy Jane : Dorothy Jane Smith, age 70, died Tuesday August 6, 1985, University Hospital of Worthington. Smith, Earl Clifford : Earl Clifford Smith, 67, of Gallia St., died Friday afternoon at Scioto Memorial Hospital. A native of Portsmouth and a graduate of Portsmouth High School, he was an Army veteran of World War II and a retired letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service with 25 years of  service. He was a member of the First Christian Church and its Christian Men's Fellowship and Mixed Adult Sunday School Class, United Commercial Travelers, James Dickey Post American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Division of Letter Carriers, and the Portsmouth Area Male Chorus. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Helen Penix Smith; a son, Thomas E. of Cypress St.; a daughter, Mrs. Paul (Patricia) Ondrus of Washington Court House; a sister, Mrs. Richard (Jennye) Keith of Cincinnati, and three grandchildren. Funeral service is planned at 1 p.m. Monday at Brock Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Wilburn officiating and interment in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. Smith, Edgar P. : Jan. 11, Rev. Edgar P. Smith, 75, retired United Presbyterian minister, died at 7 o'clock Saturday evening in his home here following an illness of six weeks. He had been in the ministry 35 years and served pastorates at Huntsville, O,; Gary Ind; Topeka Kas., and other places. He retired nine years ago. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Shields funeral home here. Rev. Bruce B. Buchanan. Findlay; Rev. C. E. Glatfelter, Kenton and Rev. Valentine Hainen and Rev. J. E. Turner, both of Forest, will officiate. The body will remain in the funeral home until after the service. Rev. Smith was born Dec. 17, 1866, in Stout O., the son of Andrew and Mary J. (Puntenney) Smith. On Dec 24 1894 he married Miss Eva Higgins who survives with a son, James H. C. Smith of Palo Alto, Calif.; a grandson James H. Smith and a granddaughter, Margaret E. Smith both of Palo Alto; a brother Harry E. Smith of Wheelersburg, O.; and a sister, Mrs. William C. Mitchell, Cincinnati.

Smith, Mrs. Eva : Mrs. Eva Higgins-Smith, 81, a former resident of Forest, died Thursday, March 26, in the home of her son, James Smith, at Palo Alto, Calif. She was the daughter of James M. Higgins and was born February 13, 1872, west of Forest. Miss Higgins married the Rev. Edgar P. Smith, a United Presbyterian minister, and he preceded her in death in January, 1942. Survivors include the son, James. The body arrived in Forest at 10:30 a.m. Monday and was taken to the Shields funeral home, where services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Hillard Camp officiated. Burial was in Hueston cemetery.

Smith, George : George Smith, 64, formerly of Byesville, died at his home in Canton, Sunday night following a four-year illness. In addition to his widow, Mrs. Kate Charleston Smith, he is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Margaret Abbrigg, Mrs. Catherine Meeglin, Mrs. Geney Redmond, all of Canton, Mary and Norma Smith of the home, one son, George, Jr., Canton, also three sisters and two brothers. Smith, Hildred Estella: Hildred Estella Smith, 86, Roosevelt Road, Barnesville, died Thursday in Barnesville Hospital. She was born July 18, 1906 in Derwent, daughter of the late Wilbert Alvan Oliver and Amelia Elizabeth Berg Oliver. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Barnesville. She was also a member of the Homemakers Club, Tourist Club, Barnesville Senior Citizens, Ruth Circle, Laurel Twig, and the Barnesville Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, William L. Smith; a son, Donald L. Smith, and a sister, Thelma Jerles. Surviving are a son, Dr. William O. Smith of Dayton; a sister, Pauline Bean of Cambridge; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her finance, Paul White of Belmont. Smith, J. Link : Frank Morgareidge, cashier of the Farmers and Merchants Bank, guardian for J. Link Smith, 72, was notified of his death, Tuesday afternoon, occurring at the State Hospital in Athens. The deceased was the son of John and Mary Jane Cain Smith and was born near Archer's Ridge, east of Caldwell. The deceased had spent several years in Kansas and Akron, later going to Detroit where he was married. He returned to Caldwell some years later and made his home with his nephew the late Amose Archer, being adjudged insane and committed to the Athens State Hospital, January, 1934. Surviving are his wife, Martha Smith, and several nephews and nieces. The body was sent to Detroit Michigan for cremation. During the former part of the week, Mrs. Smith brought the ashes back to Noble County and burial was made in the Archer's Ridge Cemetery. Journal, 13 Sep 1934 pg. 4

Smith, James William SR: Reverend James W. Smith, 85, died August 1, 2006 at Manatee Memorial Hospital. Jim was born in Portsmouth, Ohio October 17, 1920, son of the late Harry and Blanche Hoyt Smith. After graduating from Columbia Bible College in 1942, Jim Smith and Willette Thomas entered missionary service and traveled the Cuba. They were married one year later. In 1943 they moved to Aux Cayes, Haiti, where they began their family, taught a Radio Lumiere Bible class, served as professors and director of the Institut Biblique Lumiere. There they trained and mentored hundreds of Haitian pastors and leaders. Twenty four years later, Jim and Willette accepted and assignment to minister among the Haitian refugees for nineteen years in Nassau, Bahamas. Retiring to Bradenton Missionary Village in 1985, Jim and Willette continued their ministry to the Haitian community of Palmetto at the First Haitian Church of Palmetto. Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Willette, sons James Jr., Richard, and Kendal, daughters; Janette, Judith and Deborah, 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Services for James will be at Skyway Cemetery in Palmetto Florida Friday August 4, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. A memorial service is scheduled at the First Haitian Church in Palmetto Florida on Saturday August 5, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers be sent to; The First Haitian Church of Palmetto 802 23rd Street Palmetto, FL 34221 for the mission church Tiberon, Haiti.

Smith, Lell A. : Services for Lell A. Smith of Wheelersburg, who died Sunday at Scioto Memorial Hospital, are planned at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Wheelersburg United Methodist Church. A retired employee of Wheelersburg Post Office and a 50 year member of Wheelersburg Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, she was a member of the church, of which she was building fund secretary and former financial secretary and a member of its finance commission and memorial administration board. Preceded in death by her husband, Adrain D. (Jack) Smith, in 1952, she is survived by a son, A. Douglas of Wheelersburg; a brother, Paul Aeh of Wheelersburg; two sisters, Bertha Duduit of Wheelersburg and Clarice Mucha of Portsmouth, and three granddaughters. Rev. Smith, Mrs. Mary J. : Death at 11 o'clock this morning claimed Mrs. Mary J. Smith, who passed away at the home of her son Harry E. Smith of 1741 Seventh Street. She had been ill two weeks with Bright's disease. Mrs. Smith was the widow of the late Andrew C. Smith, who died six years ago. She was born in Rome, Adams County, and was 79 years old. She is survived by the following children; Edgar of Gary Ind., Mrs. Maude Mitchell of Okeans O., Clemmer of Cincinnati, and Harry E. of this city. Mrs. Smith was a woman known for her sweet traits and kindly spirit and she will be missed. The funeral services will be conducted from Mr. Smith' home on Seventh Street Sunday afternoon at 4:30 new time. The last rites will be in charge of C. E. Smith, Patricia : Graveside services are to be at 9 a.m. Saturday in Memorial Burial Park for Patricia Smith, 5 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin C. Smith of Altavista, VA. Surviving besides the parents is the paternal grandfather Harry E. Smith of Columbus. The parents are former Portsmouth residents. Rev. Charles Cecil is to officiate. Smith, Theodore H.: Theodore H. Smith, 64, Harlan Acres, Belmont, died Monday in Wheeling Hospital. He was born in Cleveland, April 17, 1926, son of the late Berton D. and Minnie McGee Smith. He was a retired employee of Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Co., Yorkville plant and a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. Surviving are his wife, Loretta Keith Smith; two daughters, Sharon Giannaris of Belmont and Karen Kopyar of St. Clairsville; a son, Eric T. Smith of Fairpoint; nine grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, where services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. Burial follows in Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville. Smith, Mrs. William H. : Rev. Fr. Louis B. Preston, pastor of St. Philomena's Catholic Church, assisted by Rev. Clement C. Crock of Cambridge and Rev. Fr. J. J. Donaldson of Carlisle, officiated at requiem high mass for Mrs. William H. Smith in the church at 9:00 last Friday morning before an unusually large number of sympathetic friends, both Catholic and Protestant. Rev. Fr. Preston spoke at length eloquently on the subject, "Arise, My Beautiful Beloved", devoting the greater part of his discourse to "Mother". William Arnold sang two most appropriate selections during the service. The pallbearers were Leo E. Carter, W. Vernon Archer, G. B. Long, Earl P. McGinnis. Serving as honorary pallbearers were U. H. Buckey, L. H. Tarleton, Erwin Farley, and Mr. Koons. Interment was made in Olive Cemetery by Funeral Directors Theo. T. Murphy and William Estadt. The Journal, 28 Nov 1940

Smith, Mrs. William H. : Mrs. Effie Archer Smith, 73, wife of Common Pleas Judge William H. Smith, died suddenly shortly before 7:00 p.m. Monday evening at her home on Oaklawn Ave. in Caldwell. Mrs. Smith was stricken while reclining on a couch in the living room of her home and was dead before the arrival of a physician. Death was attributed to embolism of the heart, which probably occurred in a fall at her home last week. Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Bell Archer and was a lifelong resident of Caldwell and vicinity. She was a member of St. Philomena's Catholic Church and was a past president of the Caldwell Women's Literary Club. Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Attorney Harold A. Smith of Caldwell, two daughters. Mrs. Marjorie Walters, of Caldwell and Miss Helen Smith of the home, a sister, Miss Blanche Archer of Caldwell and a brother William C. Archer of New York City. Funeral services conducted by Rev. Fr. L. B. Preston, will be held in St. Philomena's Catholic Church at 8 :30 Friday morning and interment will be made in the Olive Cemetery, in charge of Funeral Director Theo. T. Murphy. Spayd, Rev. L. W. : Rev. L. W. Spayd, 88, of James Street, Roseville, died at his home Wednesday evening, following a two year illness of complications. Rev. Spayd was well and favorably known in ministerial circles throughout Ohio and Michigan, and for a time served as state secretary of the Church of Christ in Michigan. He had been a minister for 58 years and spent several years in Africa as a missionary. His last charge was at Rose Farm and following his service there he retires because of poor health and advanced age. Surviving are a granddaughter, Mrs. Katherine Kannel of Oxford, PA., and an adopted daughter, Miss Mary L. McMillan of Bloomingdale, Michigan. His wife, Amanda, died in 1935. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Crooksville Church of Christ with Rev. Wood B. Cundiff and Edwin Strait officiating. Burial will be in Crooksville Cemetery. Spears, Ernest : Last rites will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Herlan Funeral Home for Ernest (Cy) Spears. Burial will be made in Greenwood Cemetery. Mr. Spears died Tuesday in St. Francis Hospital at Cambridge where he had been admitted Monday following the accidental drinking of a quantity of rubbing alcohol. Times Recorder, 13 May 1943 pg. 9

Springer, Dale M. : Dale M. Springer, 62, of Caldwell Route 2, died Tuesday, March 12, 1985 after and apparent heart attack. He was born August 12, 1922 at Caldwell to Walter and Maude McLain Springer. He was a member of the Belle Valley American Legion Post 641 and was a veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Genevieve Sandanowicz Springer, three sons, Gerald of Caldwell , James of Caldwell Route 6 and Joseph of the home; one step-son, Robert Marks of Flat Rock, MI., one step-daughter Rose Pangle of Caldwell Route 2; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one sisters Grace Parks of Louisville. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at McVay Funeral Home of Caldwell with the Rev, Roy Wikander officiating. Burial will be at Olive Cemetery, Caldwell. Springs, Albert S. : Funeral services for Albert S. Springs, who died at his home in Barnesville last Thursday evening, will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with Rev. Milton M.
